V rámci systému ošetrovateľskej starostlivosti na psychiatrickom oddelení dochádza často k situáciám, kedy sa pacient správa agresívne a ohrozuje nielen personál, ale i ostatných spolupacientov. Zdravotnícki pracovníci tak stojí pred neľahkou úlohou zvoliť účinné a zároveň etické stratégie, ktoré by zredukovali agresiu či zabránili jej ďalšej eskalácii. V článku sú uvedené základné postupy používané pri zvládaní agresívnych prejavov pacienta, zahrnujúce odporúčané spôsoby verbálnej i neverbálnej komunikácie s takýmto pacientom, úpravu prostredia, možnosti farmakologickej intervencie až po najradikálnejšie opatrenia - fyzické obmedzenie pacienta. Zdôraznený je i význam analýzy agresívneho útoku s pacientom a medzi ošetrovateľským tímom.

SUMMARY
In the course of psychiatric patient care, hospital staff - primarily nurses - come into contact with aggressive patients who are a danger not only to hospital staff but to themselves and other patients. Subsequently, nursing staff face the uneasy task of choosing both effective and ethical strategies to reduce aggression and prevent its further escalation. This paper presents some basic procedures used to manage patient's aggressive behaviour which comprise: the recommended modes of verbal and nonverbal communication with such a patient; adjustment of hospital setting, modes of pharmacological intervention, and, the most radical measure - physical confinement or restraint of patients. This paper also emphasizes the importance of analyzing the aggression between patients and nursing staff.
