SUMMARY
The problems of mental retardation are currently given an increased attention due to huge development of molecular biology and new genetic technologies that play an important role in detecting the causes of mental retardation. By its social, medical and economic scope, mental retardation is today the problem that could be solved due to multidisciplinary efforts in the area of pediatric neurology, pediatric psychiatry, medical genetics, psychology, epidemiology and other medical fields. Along with epilepsy and cerebral palsy mental retardation is the most common problem in pediatric neurology.
The nurse has an irreplaceable professional role in complex nursing care for mentally retarded children. The clinic offers professional nursing care through the nursing process method. The paper pinpoints the inevitable commitment of health care workers in working with severely handicapped children, their professional practical knowledge, love, attention and empathy.
Last but not least the significance of social work and socialeconomic support of the state should not be omitted because the consequences of the disease of children have grave and longterm impact on the environment and the family in which mentally retarded child lives. The efforts of the society are targeted at maintaining the child in the family circle as long as possible, whereas institutional nursing care and caregiving come only as the last resort.
